Naturopathic Doctors (NDs), also referred to as Naturopathic Medical Doctors (NMD), offer a unique blend of training in conventional medicine and natural therapeutics.
NDs attend federally- accredited four year post-graduate level medical schools and are trained in the same medical sciences as Medical Doctors (MDs). These medical sciences include pharmaceuticals, imaging, laboratory diagnostics, minor surgery, and other medical procedures commonly completed by family doctors. In addition to this training, Naturopathic Doctors are trained in herbal medicine, nutrition, counseling, homeopathy, physical medicine, physiotherapy, and hydrotherapy.
Naturopathic Doctors seek to restore health and promote wellness in their patients using the safest, most effective, and least invasive therapies available.

Dr. Sara Knuth (pronounced ka-nooth) is licensed as a naturopathic family doctor, who lives and works in Oakland, California. She enjoys working with patients of all ages, including children and elderly patients.
In addition to a general family practice, she also provides naturopathic fertility treatments and supportive care for patients with cancer. Dr. Knuth received her Doctorate in Naturopathic Medicine from National College of Natural Medicine (NCNM), a medical school in Portland, Oregon. Dr. Knuth has trained alongside some of the top Naturopathic Doctor’s in the U.S. including those who specialize in woman’s health, gastroenterology, and pediatrics.
Her medical training at NCNM gave her the skill set to diagnose, treat, and manage illness from both a conventional perspective and an alternative/natural approach. Her office visits are different than with most doctors, because she educates her patients about their condition(s) and the treatment options available to them. This openness empowers each patient to understand their health condition(s) and take charge of it in the way they feel comfortable.
The treatment options she works with include western herbal medicine, nutritional counseling, homeopathy, and lifestyle modification. Dr. Knuth has experience working with patients to decrease or eliminate their need for pharmaceutical medications and will work with your current medical doctor (MD) to find a time-line and plan that works best for you.
